Beard Wax Buying Guide
Here’s a guide to buying a beard wax that works for you:
Check the Label and Ingredients List
Make sure you look at the label and read the ingredients list carefully. Not only will this allow you to avoid any ingredients you may be allergic to, but it will also make you aware of the presence of any unsavory or potentially harmful chemicals. The best ingredients list is a short one made of all natural and organic ingredients.
What Hold Do You Need?
A major consideration with beard wax is the level of hold it will provide for your beard. You know your own beard best—how unruly it is, how much it needs to be tamed. If you have a particularly unruly, long, or thick beard, a medium hold beard wax might not work for you. Get the kind of hold you need to achieve the styling and taming you desire.
Fragrance
The scent may or may not be a major factor for you. Obviously, if you can’t stand the smell, you won’t want to use that beard wax. Ditto for if someone close to you (your wife, for example) hates the smell of your beard wax.
Cost
Be sure to buy one that suits your budget. Some beard waxes are somewhat expensive and may not be practical for your daily use, especially if you have to use a lot of the wax to get the style you desire.
Benefits of Beard Wax
So why should you bother with beard wax? Well, the simple reason is that you want your beard to look good. Why else would you decide to grow a beard? You don’t want your beard to look like you live under a bridge in a cardboard box. So to get that perfect beard shape and style that will wow your friends, family, coworkers, and that special someone, you need beard wax. With beard wax, you will achieve a look with your beard that will make you proud every time you look in the mirror.
Beard Wax vs. Beard Balm vs. Beard Oil
So what exactly is the difference between beard oil, beard balm, and beard wax? Well, the main difference lies in the consistency and the purpose.
Beard oil almost always comes in a liquid form. As such, it is mainly for conditioning your beard and replacing the oils that may have been stripped away by your shampoo or face wash. Your beard needs these oils to stay hydrated and conditioned. Without these oils, you may develop beard itch, beard dandruff, and dryness. Beard oil gets absorbed into your beard hairs and into your skin very quickly due to its liquid consistency.
Beard balm is somewhat In between beard oil and beard wax. It contains many of the conditioning properties of beard oil and some of the sculpting, hold, and styling properties of beard wax. It usually has a creamy consistency, like a pomade. It will be absorbed into your beard hair and your skin more slowly than beard oil but more quickly than beard wax.
Beard wax has some oils for hydrating and conditioning, but it is mainly focused on holding your beard together and taming it. Basically, you use beard wax to get your beard into the shape and style that you desire. Beard wax usually comes in a solid, waxy form (as you might imagine, since it is called beard wax). Usually, you will take some beard wax and rub it between your fingers to warm it up and apply it to your beard.

6 Best Beard Waxes: Detailed Reviews
Here are the six best beard waxes out of all the ones our editors reviewed.
1. Seven Potions Beard Wax (Top Pick)
Editor’s Rating: 5.0/5.0
This Seven Potions Beard Wax is some of the best stuff we have found on the market today. Seven Potions doesn’t mess around when it comes to beard maintenance products. The all natural, organic, and vegetarian ingredients, medium hold, and natural feel help this beard wax from Seven Potions earn the Top Pick by our editors.
Seven Potions doesn’t use any colorants, parabens, or synthetic chemicals in their beard wax. They don’t test their products on animals. What they do use are all natural and organic ingredients such as natural butters, cedar wood oil, sandalwood oil, cacao, and vitamin E. Plus, this beard wax is made in England, where you can be assured of decent quality control standards. And the scent is a nice woodsy mix of sandalwood and cedarwood that is subtle and not overpowering.
This beard wax provides a good, medium hold for all but the longest and thickest beards. Best of all, it provides shape to your beard without causing it to look unnatural or stiff. In addition to styling your beard, the oils and vitamins in the beard wax will also help to hydrate, nourish, protect, and condition your beard, getting rid of dandruff, split ends, and beard itch.
Keep in mind that this is a medium hold wax with a natural look, so it may not suit your purposes if you have a particularly long beard or if you want a stiff, sculpted look.

2. Honest Amish Original Beard Wax (Best Budget)
Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5.0
Here’s a beard wax from some folks who really know and love their beards: Honest Amish. Beards have long been integral to Amish culture. In fact, this beard wax by Honest Amish claims to be the oldest beard wax recipe in the world. Hey—if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
Honest Amish Original Beard Wax is made by hand from all natural and organic ingredients with no chemicals or other “bad stuff”. The wax is a blend of premium organic oils, essential oils, nut and fruit butters, botanical additives, and beeswax that has been harvested locally. The wax even comes in a burlap package and a tin that is 100 percent recyclable and fully biodegradable. Honest Amish Beard Wax is made by hand in the USA “for an honest wage”. The product comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee; if you’re not satisfied with the product, you can return the wax and get refunded in full.
This wax is good for controlling those wayward beard hairs and for light shaping and controlling of your beard. Basically, it doesn’t offer a super stiff hold, but it is good for taming your beard on a daily basis. If you are looking for a particularly stiff, sculpted look for your beard, this may not be strong enough for you. Also, it is not strong enough to shape extremely long beards. But it does soften and condition your beard hairs and keep fly away hairs, dandruff, and split ends from happening.
It has a licorice scent, which may or may not appeal to you, but the scent isn’t overwhelming.

3. The Bearded Goon’s Ridiculously Strong Beard and Handlebar Moustache Wax
Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5.0
So far, we have covered two beard waxes which both provide a medium hold. But if you want the strongest all-natural hold possible for a stiff, sculpted beard (or if your beard is so thick or so long that nothing but the strongest wax will do), look no further than the Bearded Goon’s Ridiculously Strong Beard and Handlebar Moustache Wax.
This wax is free from chemicals, artificial dyes, and parabens. In fact, it has a pretty simple 100 percent all natural ingredients list: beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, tree resin, and essential oils. That’s it. Nothing else. That sounded pretty good to us. The oils and shea butter serve to condition and hydrate your beard hairs and the skin underneath, keeping you free of beard dandruff and beard itch, and the beeswax and tree resin produce that ridiculously strong hold.
This stuff is strong. It is definitely the stiffest beard wax we encountered. In fact, one application of this beard wax lasted the entire day. It was so strong that it was actually pretty difficult to get it out of the tin. To use the wax, remove a fingernail sized amount from the tin with your finger and rub it between your hands vigorously for about 15 to 20 seconds until the wax becomes clear and soft. (If you are finding it very difficult to warm up and soften the wax, you might consider using a hair dryer to speed up the process.) Then you can apply it to your beard to style and sculpt it in whatever way you desire. Best of all, the wax achieves this long-lasting hold without leaving your beard feeling like a sticky, clumpy mess. It’s just smooth, strong styling (once you successfully warm up the wax) that will last you the whole day long.
Bearded Goon wax has a mild, woodsy, earthy scent that was barely noticeable for most. If your beard is long and/or thick and you want or need the strongest hold possible, this is the wax for you.

4. Badass Beard Care Beard Wax (Best Value)
Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5.0
Badass Beard Care Beard Wax is another great wax formulated specifically for beards that provides a decent hold and all-around excellent performance. Don’t be fooled by the silly name and the somewhat juvenile labeling. This is a great beard wax. Also, the company is owned and operated by a veteran, and its products are made in the US.
This beard wax is composed of all natural ingredients such as shea butter, bees wax, lanolin, cocoa butter, coconut oil, argan oil, apricot oil, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, pure vitamin E oil, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus oil. All these ingredients serve to deeply condition, protect, and style your beard hairs as well as to give them a fuller appearance. It basically causes your beard to appear fuller and more dense.
This beard wax is available in 12 different scents. Our favorite and the most popular overall was The Ladies Man (lemon and vanilla), with The Original (sandalwood and vanilla) coming in at a close second. Some also preferred The Secret Agent, which is an unscented version of the wax. However, when you are choosing which scent to buy, remember to take a look at the ingredients list. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the beard wax you choose.

5. Billy Jealousy Tin Man No.1 Beard Wax
Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5.0
This beard wax from Billy Jealousy provides a reasonably strong hold with ingredients that look somewhat questionable but which are all actually natural and organic ingredients.
This Billy Jealousy beard wax contains no parabens and no sulfates and is made without any animal testing. It is made in the US, so when it claims to be all natural and organic, it really must be, as it is subject to the stringent quality control standards of the US. Ingredients such as glycerin are naturally occurring.
This beard wax provides a strong hold for your beard, styling it, sculpting it, taming it, and keeping all those stray hairs in place. It reduces beard itch and beard dandruff by hydrating, conditioning, and protecting your beard. One of its key ingredients is lanolin wax, which explains why the hold is so good. Lanolin wax will mimic your body’s sebum production to make your beard supple, pliable, and soft while also strengthening the hold.
This beard wax smells of musky vanilla, but the scent is not overpowering by any means. If you are looking for a strong hold and you don’t mind an ingredients list that you can’t necessarily pronounce, check out this beard wax from Billy Jealousy.

6. Urban Nomads Stronghold Beard and Hair Wax
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
Urban Nomads Stronghold Beard and Hair Wax is another great beard wax that provides a strong hold for your beard while also supplying your beard hairs with the necessary oils to keep it looking soft, healthy, full, thick, and shiny. This beard wax is handcrafted in Barcelona, Spain.
Urban Nomads uses no silicone, no parabens, no colorants, and no PEGs. What it does contain are ingredients such as beeswax, argan oil, shea butter, sesame seed oil, citric fruit oils, bergamot oil, rosehip, and sweet almond. Some of these essential oils are antiseptic, which disinfect and help to eliminate beard itch. Other ingredients serve to hydrate, nourish, and condition your beard hairs. But beeswax is one of its primary ingredients, allowing it to provide a strong hold for your beard and tame fly away hairs. In fact, this is the strongest beard wax we reviewed. It is actually stronger than the Bearded Goon’s Ridiculously Strong Beard and Handlebar Moustache Wax, but it is not as high on the list due to the slightly questionable ingredients list, which we will now turn to.
Though the glass jar in which it comes claims to contain 100 percent natural ingredients, you will find that the ingredient label doesn’t seem to support that claim, showing that it contains ingredients like stearates, esters, and alcohols. It does come in a nice glass jar, which serves to preserve the beard wax quite well.
But it is by far the strongest beard wax we encountered. It may not be all natural, but if you want the strongest beard wax possible and you aren’t worried about synthetic ingredients, this is the beard wax for you. Also, it smells pretty good, and the slightly sweet scent is far from overwhelming.
We included this one on our list due to its incredibly strong hold. But if you are worried about the ingredients list, we won’t hold it against you if you steer clear of this one. But if you need a stronger hold and nothing else is working for you, this may be the beard wax for you.

The Cons |
---|
Some sketchy chemicals and ingredients that cast doubt on the “all-natural” claim |
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a 100 percent all natural beard wax that is good for your beard, for the skin underneath it, and for your overall health, go with one of the first four we recommended (Seven Potions, Honest Amish, Bearded Goon, or Badass Beard Care).
If you are looking for the strongest hold among those beard waxes with all natural ingredients, go with the Bearded Goon’s Ridiculously Strong Beard and Handlebar Moustache Wax. It is the strongest hold you can achieve with such simple, all natural ingredients.
But if you are looking for the strongest hold period and are not too worried about the ingredients list, try the Urban Nomads Stronghold Beard and Hair Wax. It will certainly provide you with the strongest hold on the market.
Remember to choose a beard wax that feels good to you and can handle your type of beard. Also, make sure that the scent of the beard wax you choose is not going to bother you or those around you too much. If your wife, girlfriend, or significant other simply hates the smell of the beard wax you buy, you might want to make another choice! Good luck, and happy styling!
