Even though it is only now being recognized as a super food, coconut oil’s elixir-like benefits for the hair have always been unquestionable. It is so accomplished that it can handle virtually all types of hair problems ranging from dryness to hair loss.
It has anti-microbial capabilities, it has amazing hydrating qualities, and it even has incredible nourishing properties. If you only had enough time to add just one more component to your hair care regime, then we’ll tell you to make it coconut oil.

Should Coconut Oil Be Solid or Liquid?
Pure coconut oil has one unique property. It can be solid or liquid depending on the room temperature. It is liquid above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and solid below 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Coconut oil’s physical state varies this drastically because it contains both, long chain fatty acids and medium chain fatty acids. Long chain fatty acids such as the hugely beneficial lauric acid have higher melting points while medium chain fatty acids have lower melting points.
Since coconut oil contains both types of fatty acids, it’s average melting point is very close to the average room temperature. This is why it changes its physical state so easily in our homes.
What Are the Different Types of Coconut Oil?
There are different types of coconut oil. The following are some of the more common types.
Virgin (Pure) Coconut Oil Vs. Processed (Refined) Coconut Oil
Coconut oil, like all other naturally occurring substances, is the most beneficial and nourishing when raw. Virgin coconut oil is the purest form of coconut oil. It is obtained through mechanical processes without the use of chemicals or elaborate refining techniques.
Virgin coconut oil retains all its nutrients in their natural form and undamaged. Incidentally, virgin and extra-virgin coconut oil are the same since coconut oil doesn’t go through as many pressing sessions as olive oil does.
Processed coconut oil is significantly less effective than virgin coconut oil, but it is still more beneficial than many other types of oils. It is also more difficult for our skin to absorb processed coconut oil as opposed to virgin coconut oil.
Fractionated coconut oil is a form of processed coconut oil. It is mainly used as a carrier oil, i.e., it is good for mixing with other essential oils. However, with fractionated coconut oil, you have to be careful about adulterants, additives, and fillers. These concerns are not relevant in the case of virgin coconut oil.
Organic Coconut Oil Vs. Non-Organic Coconut Oil
Organic and non-organic coconut oil differ only in terms of the coconuts they are obtained from.
Organic coconut oil is obtained from coconuts grown without the use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers. Non-organic coconut oil is obtained from coconuts that may have been grown with the help of chemicals.
USDA organic certified virgin coconut oil is the purest, safest coconut oil. However, you can get extremely high-quality organic virgin coconut oil without this certification as well. For example, coconuts sourced from Asia can be organic but don’t come with USDA organic certifications.
Cold Pressed Coconut Oil Vs. Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil Vs. Centrifuge Extracted Coconut Oil
Cold pressed coconut oil is obtained by mechanically pressing coconut flakes at extremely low temperatures. Since heat can damage some nutrients, cold pressed coconut oil is considered to be better than most other types, except centrifuge extracted coconut oil.
Centrifuge extracted coconut oil is obtained when chilled coconut milk is spun at high velocity. This is the best type of coconut oil in terms of purity because it has the least amount of moisture. It is also incredibly expensive and has a very light coconut smell and taste.
Expeller pressed coconut oil is obtained when coconut is mechanically pressed. The difference here is that it isn’t done at lower temperatures. Since high pressure generates heat and heat damages nutrients, expeller pressed coconut oil may not be as beneficial as cold pressed or centrifuge extracted coconut oil.
How Does Coconut Oil Help Against Hair Loss?
Coconut oil can be instrumental against hair loss in not one but four different ways. Here they are:
It Prevents Hair Damage
Lauric acid is a major component in coconut oil. Lauric acid and it’s derivatives account for around 50% of coconut oil. This is a good thing because lauric acid is responsible for the greatest strength of coconut oil –damage prevention in hair.
Lauric acid is proven to be very effective in preventing hair damage. A study conducted in 2003 found that participants that used coconut oil before and after washing their hair didn’t lose as much protein loss from their hair as others who didn’t.
Coconut oil reduces protein loss in the hair because of lauric acid. Lauric acid can penetrate deep into the hair strand and bind with proteins, preventing them from escaping.
Since the majority of your hair is made of protein, it is not that difficult to see how coconut oil can help against hair damage. When hairs lose protein, they become weak and brittle. The natural progression of this occurrence is hair loss. This is why coconut oil is so effective against hair loss.
It Ensures Nutrition
Coconut oil has a direct impact on the amount of nutrition hair follicles and hairs get. This impact is twofold. The first is associated with the penetrative powers of coconut oil and the second is connected to the number of nutrients inherent in coconut oil.
It is a proven fact that coconut oil can go deep into the hair strand. In one study, its penetrative powers were assessed independently while in another they were compared to other more commonly used oils such as sunflower oil and olive oil. Coconut oil can penetrate deeper mainly because it consists of shorter chains of fatty acids.
In addition to multiple, very beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids, coconut oil also contains other nutrients like iron, potassium, vitamins E and K, and multiple antioxidants.
The penetrative powers of coconut oil ensure that these nutrients reach deep into the hair follicles and the hair, making coconut oil one of the most nutritious oils available in nature.
It Counters Infection
Coconut oil has very potent anti-infection properties. Its anti-microbial properties mean that it resists bacteria and fungi alike. Since infection can be one of the reasons for hair loss, these anti-microbial qualities of coconut oil can help against hair loss as well. This is why it is such a potent counter to problems like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
It Counters Hygral Fatigue
If the hair is exposed to a lot of water, it tends to absorb it as is seen in high humidity or in situations where people over condition or over moisturize their hair.
When the excess water is removed, the hair contracts. If this process is allowed to repeat, hair starts developing cracks and becomes weaker and more brittle over time. This can directly lead to hair loss.
However, coconut oil prevents hygral fatigue from happening. It seals the moisture inside the hair strand and prevents more moisture from the environment from creeping in. Therefore, coconut oil can directly avert a situation where hygral fatigue can cause hair loss.
Are There Any Side Effects of Using Coconut Oil for Hair Loss?
Believe it or not, coconut oil has no real side effects except for one that arises out of overuse. If used too much, coconut oil can leave the hair too oily or too greasy.
There is only a certain amount of coconut oil that your scalp and hair can handle at any point in time. If you apply too much coconut oil, it can result in oil buildup in your scalp and hair which may cause other problems such as bad smells and grime collection.

4 Best Virgin Coconut Oil for Hair Loss: Detailed Reviews
1. Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Top Pick)
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
The best coconut oil is the one that is closest to the source material, i.e., raw coconut. This organic extra virgin coconut oil from Viva Naturals is the best example. It is USDA organic certified, cold pressed, and unrefined.
Its USDA certification is important because it means that the coconuts used to obtain the oil are non-GMO and grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
Since it is one of the purest coconut oil products in the market, it offers all the benefits of coconuts. Most importantly, though, it has the ability to not only slow down hair loss but also promote hair growth.
Other advantages of using this coconut oil are hydration for hair and skin, softening of the hair, and prevention of infections. We should also mention that this product is free of gluten as well.
Because this is an all-natural, organic coconut oil product, it can be used in cooking and baking as well. Further, this coconut oil can be used as a spread in place of butter.
However, truly pure coconut oil tends to be very expensive, and this is true with this product as well. This is easily one of the most expensive coconut oils in the market currently. The only saving grace here is that virgin coconut oil tends to last a very long time because you don’t need to use a lot to get its benefits.
A perceived flaw of this product is that it can have brown flecks or sediments at the bottom of the jar. It isn’t really a flaw, however. Instead, it is normal and happens in cold pressing, when fibers of coconut get introduced into the process. The brownish coconut oil is also pure and can be used without any side effects.
As is the case with all products without preservatives, this coconut oil is susceptible to getting mold. Luckily, you can prevent this from happening by simply ensuring that moisture is not introduced to the oil.
Also, cold pressed, organic coconut oil will always have a very strong coconut smell. If you usually can’t handle strong smells or don’t appreciate the coconut smell, coconut oil may not be a good choice for you.
Finally, this product comes in a plastic container. The container isn’t the best and may not seal properly. This could lead to leakage and wastage during delivery and while you use it too.
We do recommend transferring the coconut oil into a high-quality glass jar as that should prevent leakage and even keep moisture at bay.
Who’s it for: If you’re willing to pay a little extra for high-quality cold pressed virgin coconut oil, then get this product from Viva Naturals.

2. Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0
This product from Nutiva is a good alternative to organic virgin coconut oil from Viva Naturals. It is also cold pressed from USDA organic certified coconuts and unrefined.
As a result, it is a great way to slow down hair loss, encourage hair growth, and maintain existing hair. Further, it can improve the appearance of the hair making them shinier, better hydrated, and more voluminous.
One area where this product performs slightly better than most other organic virgin coconut oils is packaging. The container in which the company delivers its coconut oil is BPA free. This prevents chemical contaminants from seeping into the oil.
While they’ve done well in putting their oil in a BPA-free container, they haven’t managed to make it leak proof. There’s a good chance that the container will leak, either in transit or while in use.
The company also sells this product in seven different sizes. While we’re reviewing the 78-ounce bottle because it is economical, you can always try the product in smaller sizes.
Other sizes you can get this product in include a 15-ounce container, a double pack of 15-ounce containers, a 54-ounce container, a double pack of 54-ounce containers, a 1-gallon container, and a double pack of 78-ounce containers.
In the larger containers, this product turns out to be incredibly economical. Virgin coconut oil is traditionally an expensive product, but by shipping large volumes, the company makes it significantly cheaper for most users.
That brings with it, other problems though. The foremost of these is that of quality. Since the company manufactures coconut oil in bulk, users sometimes end up getting older batches. There are simply too many complaints from users of this product about off-putting taste, texture, and odor.
In fact, this scenario is common enough that you need to prepare for it. Luckily, the company is willing to either replace your product or refund your money when something like this happens.
The problem of moisture exposure exists with this product just like all other virgin coconut oil products. As a result, you can’t let any moisture in or you’ll have to deal with mold in the coconut oil.
Further, like all virgin coconut oils, the smell of coconut is strong in this product. Unless you’re a fan of the coconut smell or can handle strong odors, you might want to look at other options to counter hair loss.
Who’s it for: If you’re willing to risk receiving a bad batch for a lower price, then you can get virgin coconut oil at a great price by ordering from Nutiva.

3. Shea Moisture 100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0
Shea Moisture has been a trusted brand for a very long time. It was established in 1912 and has consistently been reliable ever since. When a company like this offers a pure product, you can safely commit to it.
The virgin coconut oil from Shea Moisture is the genuine article. This is a cold pressed coconut oil product that is made from fair trade coconuts. Therefore, by buying this product, you’ll be improving the livelihood of a small farmer somewhere in the world.
Because of its purity, this coconut oil is very beneficial for hair, skin, and nails. It’s real benefit becomes evident against hair loss. If you use this product regularly, you can not only slow down any hair loss that you may be experiencing but will also start seeing new growth.
Of course, you’ll immediately see an improvement in the appearance of your hair as well. It will seem healthier, shinier, thicker, and will display more volume too. Further, if you’ve had some infection of the scalp, it will fade away slowly but completely.
Also, this product hasn’t been tested on animals, not that putting virgin coconut oil on an animal would hurt it in anyway.
The company offers this product in two sizes – a 15-ounce container and a pack of 2 15-ounce containers. Even if you get the double pack, it will turn out to be on the expensive side. It isn’t the most expensive virgin coconut oil out there, but it does require a considerable outlay.
Despite being manufactured by a reliable brand, there are some problems with this product. The foremost of these are allergic reactions. In simple terms, the number of complaints against this product regarding allergic reactions is far too many, particularly if you compare it to other products.
We don’t understand why this is the case. Your guess is as good as ours. Further, if you see some brownish deposit at the bottom of the container, don’t be alarmed because it is normal and not a sign of some contamination.
However, if you see mold, you should worry. It has appeared because you inadvertently exposed the oil to moisture either through a wet utensil or by keeping it somewhere with high humidity.
You will also need to be okay with the coconut smell to be able to use it. The smell is strong with this product, after all. After ordering, be prepared with a spare glass jar or a mop because this product’s container is susceptible to breakage and leakage.
Who’s it for: If you only trust brands that have been around a while, this virgin coconut oil from Shea Moisture is ideal for you.

4. COCO&CO Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
There aren’t many centrifuge-extracted virgin coconut oil products in the market. This one from COCO&CO is one, however. No other product compares to it when it comes to purity. It contains the most nutrients and the best fatty acids. This makes it the most potent option when it comes to slowing down hair growth and even promoting hair growth.
It also contains the least amount of moisture. In fact, the company says it contains 800% less moisture than other virgin coconut oils in the market. Its lower moisture content gives it a much longer shelf life and increased potency. You’ll still have to keep it away from moisture as exposure can lead to mold.
This product only has a light coconut smell and taste, unlike most other virgin coconut oils. The lighter smell and taste make it ideal for people with extra-sensitive noses, but not for cooking.
You can get this product in six different sizes. These include a 2-ounce bottle, a 4.5-ounce bottle, an 8-ounce bottle, a 15.5-ounce bottle, a pack of 2 8-ounce bottles, and a 32-ounce bottle.
The 32-ounce bottle is the cheapest. However, even that is more expensive than all other similar products in the market. The expense is a major concern with this product, but then centrifuge extracted coconut oil is always pricey.
The container this product comes in looks like glass but is really hard plastic. It is also prone to breaking, especially the cap. Leakage during delivery is also a problem, particularly since the product is so expensive.
Who’s it for: If cost is not a concern and you want the purest virgin coconut oil, get this product.

3 Best Fractionated Coconut Oil for Hair Loss: Detailed Reviews
5. Majestic Pure Fractionated Coconut Oil
Editor’s Rating: /5.0
Because of its incredible penetrating powers, coconut oil is a great carrier oil. It can carry other oils and their benefits deep into the scalp, follicles, and hair strands with ease.
Fractionated coconut oil is used for this purpose, and this product from Majestic Pure is a good example of that. It meets one of the most important criteria for being a good carrier oil, i.e., it remains liquid at room temperature. Further, this product is odorless and clear or light yellow in color.
It is also a non-greasy oil that doesn’t leave behind a stain on clothes. Finally, it has a very long shelf life and doesn’t go bad easily. All these qualities make this product an excellent oil for massages and aromatherapy. The low cost helps that aspect too.
On the flip side, this product isn’t as beneficial for hair loss as virgin coconut oil. For instance, while it may slow down hair loss, it doesn’t really promote hair growth. The reason for this is the absence of lauric acid, which is removed during the fractionation process.
It still possesses the other qualities of coconut oil such as hydration and maintenance of hair. Majestic Pure sells this product in two sizes – a 16-ounce bottle and a pack of 2 16-ounce bottles.
They also provide a pump with the bottle to make life more convenient for the user. The only problem is that the pump isn’t very reliable and doesn’t work consistently.
This is a form of processed coconut oil, which is probably why there are so many cases of allergic reactions reported against it. It’s quality is also a little inconsistent and many users report unexpected sedimentation inside the bottle. Moreover, users also report the oil going rancid too quickly.
This product is also surprisingly expensive for fractionated coconut oil, especially with its poor-quality packaging. The bottle has a tendency to leak. The company does have a 60-day money refund policy in case you buy this product and find it unsatisfactory.
Who’s it for: If you want a carrier oil that will last a while, then this product from Majestic Pure is a good bet.

6. Premium Nature Fractionated Coconut Oil
Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0
Premium Nature’s fractionated coconut oil is perfect for aromatherapy sessions and massages in more ways than one. The foremost is the fact that it remains liquid at room temperature and is the perfect carrier oil.
In addition, this product has no smell and doesn’t leave a stain even though it isn’t entirely colorless. It is light yellow in color. Further, because of the way it has been processed, it has a very long shelf life and doesn’t go rancid too quickly.
While fractionation has given this product all these qualities, it has also taken a few away. For instance, this oil doesn’t contain lauric acid along with some other nutrients that coconut oil is known for. As a result, it isn’t as nourishing for the hair, follicles, and scalp as virgin coconut oil.
Despite that, it can still slow down hair loss. At the same time, by using fractionated instead of virgin coconut oil, you’ll be giving up on the hair regrowth.
The company sells this bottle with a pump, but the quality of the pump is such that we wonder why they even bother. The pump leaks too freely making this product very messy. In a way, we understand because this is a fairly affordable product and we know enough not to expect high-quality packaging with affordable products.
What we don’t understand is why this coconut oil is causing allergic reactions in so many of its users. Then again, this isn’t completely new with processed oils. You’ll want to test this oil on the inside of your elbow before using it freely.
Who’s it for: If you’re looking to use coconut oil as a carrier oil at an affordable price, get this product from Premium Nature.

7. Invivo Essential Fractionated Coconut (Best Value)
Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0
The majority of fractionated coconut oil products in the market tend to cause allergic reactions in a lot of their users. What sets this product from Invivo Essential apart from the rest is that it doesn’t.
This makes it one of the safer options for people looking to use coconut oil as a carrier oil in their massage and aromatherapy sessions. What also helps is that this oil is odorless, even though a lot of its users say that it has a plastic smell.
Further, it has a very long shelf life and is completely clear in consistency. This ensures that it doesn’t stain. This product has these qualities because it is manufactured completely in the US.
In fact, the company dubs it as “premium therapeutic grade” oil. All these qualities can’t hide the fact that this product isn’t as helpful against hair loss as virgin coconut oil.
During the process of fractionation, key nutrients of coconut oil such as lauric acid were stripped away from this oil, making it less potent. Resultantly, it can slow down hair loss to an extent but will not encourage hair growth at all.
This fractionated coconut oil comes with a pump, but we advise you against using it. It is faulty and makes the bottle leak. At the same time, the company has admitted to this problem and claims to be looking into solving it by changing its pump.
The bottle, itself, is reliable. It is amber in color which protects the oil inside from ultraviolet rays. It also comes with a free eBook, which is quite handy.
The company backs its product with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty and a satisfaction guarantee. This is probably why this product is slightly on the expensive side when compared to other similar products in the market.
Who’s it for: If you’re looking to use coconut oil as a carrier oil and want something reliable, get this therapeutic grade product from Invivo.

3 Best Coconut Oil Shampoos for Hair Loss: Detailed Reviews
8. Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
This is the second Shea Moisture product we’re reviewing in this guide. While the previous one was virgin coconut oil, this one is a shampoo that contains coconut oil. Naturally, this product will not be as effective as organic virgin coconut oil, but that doesn’t mean you should consider it.
In fact, it means that you should consider using the two in combination for best results. Individually, you can use this shampoo to slow down hair loss but shouldn’t expect it to help new hair grow.
This is an all-natural and organic shampoo made with fair trade coconuts. This means that it contains no artificial additives, fillers, and chemicals such as sulfates. Unfortunately, that also means that it doesn’t lather as well as shampoos with sulfates in them.
However, lack of lather doesn’t necessarily mean that your hair isn’t getting cleansed. This shampoo contains a natural cleanser in the form of hibiscus. Therefore, you don’t need to use more of this shampoo in each wash to ensure lather as cleansing takes place without it.
Hibiscus also contains vitamin C which strengthens hair. Coconut oil and hibiscus, together, counter and prevent infections. The coconut oil in the shampoo, however, overpowers all other smells. This is why this shampoo has a strong smell that will only appeal to you if you like the smell of coconuts.
This shampoo is meant for men and women with extra curly and thick hair. However, that just means that it is very strong and intensely hydrating. Even if your hair type isn’t curly or thick, you can still use this shampoo as many people have already tried it successfully. Some of them even have color and chemically treated hair.
You can get this shampoo in two sizes – a single 16-ounce bottle and a double pack of 16-ounce bottles. Whichever one you choose, you’ll find this shampoo to be very economical although the two-pack is naturally more affordable.
The only real flaw of this product is that its packaging isn’t the best. The bottles tend to leak because the lid is very weak and prone to breaking.
Who’s it for: If you’re looking for a daily use coconut oil shampoo, get this one.

9. OGX Extra Strength Damage Remedy + Coconut Miracle Oil Shampoo (Best Budget)
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
OGX has a very high-quality and potent shampoo based on coconut oil. They’ve combined coconut oil with tiare and vanilla extract to create an intensely moisturizing shampoo.
This shampoo is powerful enough to repair damaged or excessively dry hair by hydrating and nourishing it. Again, because this is a shampoo and not virgin coconut oil, it can only repair damaged hair and slow down hair loss, but not grow new hair.
Even though this shampoo is intended for people with thick and curly hair, it can be used by anyone with any hair type including people with chemical or color treated hair.
This shampoo doesn’t even contain sulfates, making it safe for even people with sensitive scalps. Since it is free of sulfates, it doesn’t lather as well as other shampoos. It does possess a great smell and creamy consistency, making it good for daily use.
The only real problem with this shampoo is that, like all OGX products, it is expensively priced.
Who’s it for: If you have damaged or brittle hair, want to use a coconut oil shampoo, and aren’t financially constrained, get this shampoo from OGX.

10. Marc Anthony True Professional Hydrating Coconut Oil & Shea Butter Shampoo & Conditioner Set
Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0
This shampoo and conditioner set from Marc Anthony is based around coconut oil, making it excellent at hydrating dry hair. Apart from coconut oil, it contains shea butter and is infused with biotin.
Biotin, as you may know, is particularly beneficial against hair loss. Its combination with coconut oil and shea butter makes this shampoo quite effective against hair loss. While this shampoo will help you slow the down the rate of hair loss, it won’t really help you regrow hair you may have already lost.
Simultaneously, if you’ve been grappling with dryness related problems such as frizzy hair, flyaway hair, and split ends, then this shampoo will resolve them all for you. The shampoo has a very nice smell and even leaves hair soft and shiny after every wash.
It is a natural shampoo and doesn’t contain sulfates. This is why it is ideal for people with a sensitive scalp. You may find that it doesn’t produce enough lather, though.
This, combined with the fact that it is quite thick, causes it to run out way too soon. Since the cost of this shampoo and conditioner set is already substantial, you may find it a bit too expensive.
Who’s it for: If you’re looking for a coconut oil-based shampoo and conditioner set, then get this product.
