Things to Consider Before Buying
We all know what it’s like to have a bad hair day. It’s bad enough when it’s your own natural hair that starts acting up and that much worse when the problems are caused by something you’ve bought and paid for.
Many people get put off using hair fibers by products that simply weren’t a good match for their head and hair. Rather than rolling the dice and potentially buying a product you can’t use, let’s talk about some of the things you can use to determine a good hair fiber fit.
Material
This is one of the most important aspects of hair fibers, and also one that many people overlook. Just because a given hair fiber has a good color match and seems to fill in other people’s hair well doesn’t mean it will be a good fit for you.
Especially if you’re looking at hair fibers other than the ones we’ve included in this list, you need to look at what material they’re using.
Keratin
Keratin is far and away the most common hair fiber substance. It’s easy to source or synthesize and does a decent job of creating coverage. Since your hair includes a good amount of keratin naturally, the protein does a good job mimicking the texture and appearance of natural hair.
However, keratin can be one of the clumpier hair fibers, and doesn’t like humidity. Especially if you live in a humid environment, where it may be difficult to apply the fibers without clumping, you may want to consider an alternative.
Cotton
There’s a reason only one hair fiber made with cotton fibers made our list. Cotton, while a serviceable fiber, can be tricky to work with and create a less than natural-looking finish. Caboki manages to create a product with a good finish, but they also use a very specific breed of cotton and don’t release their processing details.
Generally, we recommend avoiding cotton, it just doesn’t look natural enough in most hair. Unless of course, you’re buying Caboki.
Wool
Another common option, wool is thought to provide good coverage and texture despite being a fairly different fiber than human hair. In fact, it does provide a high level of coverage.
But, we didn’t include any wool hair fiber products for one important reason. They can seriously irritate your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin at all. Plus, the texture of wool hair fibers isn’t very pleasant.
So, while you can get good coverage and color matches in wool hair fibers, we still recommend avoiding them if you have sensitive skin.
Human Hair
The last, and rarest, option is natural human hair fibers. These fibers are increasingly available but aren’t yet common. Sourcing them is simply too difficult for many providers to manage while also keeping costs low and consumers happy.
That said, natural human hair fibers will usually provide the most convincing and realistic finish. They’re good for sensitive skin and usually bind well to your hair.
However, there is one limitation. Human hair fibers tend to have a narrower selection of hair colors and tend toward darker hair. That’s mostly because the people and places who make a trade of selling hair also tend to have darker hair colors.
So, while this is a good option for many, it will be hard to find a supplier of human hair fibers for blonde and redheaded consumers.
Misc Ingredients and Preservatives
As a general rule, your hair fibers should have as few ingredients as possible. The best hair fibers consist of the fiber, the colorants, and nothing else.
Since small fibers like this can be mildly irritating no matter what they’re made from, it’s important not to introduce anything else that can further irritate your scalp.
While some companies still include other ingredients, like fillers and preservatives, the practice is getting less common. Aim for your hair fibers to have 5 ingredients or less on the label (some will have more just to accommodate the colorant blend).
Can You Use Hair Fibers with Other Hair Products?
Yes and no. Hair fibers and hair spray go hand in hand. You may even be able to get away with some dry shampoo (although most people won’t need it since the fibers also absorb some oil from your hair and scalp).
But, you shouldn’t apply hair fibers to hair that is wet or oily, which can make it difficult to use some products. You need to avoid gels, creams, and pomades. All three will just make the hair fibers clump and ruin the fill-in effect.
Leave-in conditioners can also cause problems if they reduce the static electricity in your hair since that static is part of what holds and distributes the hair fibers.
Other treatments, like Rogaine for hair loss, are also a problem. It’s not that the hair fibers and Rogaine are incompatible, but Rogaine needs to be applied every day and will mess up the hair fibers if it’s applied while they are on your hair.
So, while you can use some other products, and even Rogaine, while using hair fibers, you shouldn’t apply them together. That means that you’ll likely go through your hair fibers a lot faster since you’ll be reapplying every day. While technically an option, it raises your costs considerably to do so.
In general, stick to hand styling and hair spray. Other hair products will get in the way of the hair fibers. If your hair and scalp need some extra TLC, plan a couple of days where you can go without the hair fibers to use other moisturizing and repairing products.

We appreciated that this hair fiber option is mostly weather resistant. Like the best hair fibers, you can safely change clothes, go to the gym, and even get caught in a storm without washing the fibers away.
They will wash away with shampoo and water however and aren’t nearly as effective for going swimming since the pool chemicals will likely also strip the fibers out of your hair.
The biggest downside with this brand is that there isn’t a good color match for blondes. While you can attempt a color match by mixing different colors, this brand is geared toward people with darker hair.
Aside from color, it’s suitable for all hair types. The fibers will bind to your hair and follow its natural texture and curvature, making it hard to distinguish the hair fibers from your natural strands.
